Oscar Wilde’s short story The Picture of Dorian Gray has been adapted into a movie a number of times. The most recent adaptation of the short story was made in 2007. It was produced by Third Rock Films and directed by Duncan Roy. It starred David Gallagher in the title role.

Dorian Gray was a young man who inherited his father’s house in 19th-century London. When we first meet Dorian, he is an innocent wide-eyed youth. He’s basically a good kid, and has little experience with life. His friend,

an up-and-coming painter, painted beautiful portrait of Dorian which soon hangs on the wall in the front room. Dorian falls under the influence of Henry, an older man who is jaded and corrupt. Although Henry himself does not always hold to the corrupted values he expounds upon to Dorian, Dorian becomes very influenced by him and soon begins to change. One night, at Henry’s suggestion, Dorian finds himself proclaiming that he would sell his soul to the devil in order to obtain eternal youth. He jokes that his portrait should wither and grow old while he himself remains young.

Dorian falls in love with a young actress of ignoble birth name Sybil. The young couple is very much in love, and Dorian wants to marry her. However, Henry remains a bad influence. He soon has young Dorian visiting warehouses and seducing young ladies. Although Henry himself does not always hold to the corrupted values he expounds upon to Dorian, Dorian becomes very influenced by him and soon begins to change.

When Sybil realizes that Dorian has become unfaithful to her, she ...

breaks it off with him, especially after he tells her that she does not want children. He brushes off her dismissal, but later finds out, from her brother, that Sybil has killed herself — she was pregnant with Dorian’s child and drowned herself in the river. Devastated, Dorian discovers that his image in the painting now has blood on its hands. During reacts by becoming heartless and cruel, falling further and further under Henry’s influence. So Dorian has become a real monster. His portrait becomes more and more corroded
as his character and soul become more and more stained. Soon he has committed both adultery and murder.

The tragedy of Dorian Gray is the ruination of the soul of a young man. We know from the beginning of the story that the ending will not be happy. The story is extremely dark, and it is at times painful to watch the boys life unravel. However, Dorian Gray is a morality tale which warns the viewer or reader about the perils of corruption that destroys the innocence of youth. I enjoyed the movie.
