GAME: Champions Of Norrath: Return To Arms (Playstation 2)

The sequel to the first Champions of Norrath. Champions of Norrath: Return To Arms is another action roleplaying game developed by Snowblind and released in Febuary 2005. You can play and customize characters like the Barbarian, Wood Elf Ranger, High Elf Cleric, Erudite Wizard, Dark Elf Shadowknight, and two new races such as the Vah Shir Berserker and the Iksar Shaman.

You’ll creep your way through vast dungeons, discover and open treasure chests, slaughter enemies, and occasionally search for the quest item needed to accomplish your task. The two new classes that have been added which is the Iksar Shaman and the Vah Shir Berserker, the former a lizard-like mage/fighter and the latter a feline warrior who specializes in ranged attacks add more replay value to the game.

      Bottom

Line: This plays exactly like the first game. You will notice more of whats been brought back rather than whats new. If you are a true fan of the first game, well this expansion is for you.

PROS: Fans of the world of Norrath will enjoy endless hours searching for rare weapons, armor and accessories. And also enjoy searching for runes to empower their equipment.

You can also import your full geared character from the previous Champions of Norrath to jump in the fray quickly or simply create a new character and start from scratch.

The new Medal Rounds/Quest, which become accessible after beating a level adds a bit more gameplay in single-player. These Medal Rounds act like mini-games and are either easy or insanely difficult. Accomplishing these can actually open up a few “side” quests,

      • earn extra attribute points, items and/or unlock some levels for the multiplayer or online game..

CONS: Having two new characters and spells don’t mean much once you have played the first Champions Of Norrath. Everything is pretty much the same as it is, which is killing the same boring enemies, gather gold by smashing a thousand crates and boxes, and repeating dungeons over and over just to increase your experience and wealth. The level designs hasn’t changed a bit. You will be seeing the same bland colors, textures and structures in the same dungeon after dungeon filled with mindless enemies.

If you have played the first you will notice that they have “recycled” enemies from the first game. This is inexcusable. I would rather fight new monsters rather than fight what I have beaten years ago.

/> The soundtrack is pretty much ripped from the first. The voice overs aren’t even that impressive. My Barbarian talks like an Irish drunkard.

This is one of the buggiest titles of the ps2. Items can disappear, boxes can be “tranported” right to the background, sometimes enemies suddenly stop attacking and your stat points can be duplicated (which is a cheat). You can also get a chance to screw up your equipment and inventory. My cousin was able to let his Berserker wield two two-handed weapons at the same time, making him unstoppable in Player versus Player mode That’s insane!

        Would I buy this game?

If you are a big fan of Norrath then by all means, by this game. It gives more “Norrath” and branches out a bit of the storyline. If you are not a fan, then I would suggest renting it.
