The Amazing Race: They Don’t Call This the Amazing Race for Nothin’ was the beginning of the 17th season for this Emmy winning reality show where pairs go off in search of adventure in the hopes of bringing home the million dollar prize.

This season there are two couples that are pseudo celebrities. First, there is a couple of TV show hosts from one of the home shopping networks and then there is the reigning Miss Kentucky and her dad. I’m a little surprised a reigning queen could go away for a month, but apparently so.

      Of the

11 teams, the ones that have initially struck a chord with me are the A Cappella singing team, a couple of nerdy type guys who plan to sing their way tot he finish line, and two lady doctors, who apparently are heart surgeons, but you’d never guess it from their appearance. I love it. They actually finished second in the opening round.

The chase began in Glouchester, Massachusetts with host Phil Keogan telling the contestants about a new element to the game, that being that the first team to check in gets an express pass, a valuable prize ...

      • that they can use to skip a task and move on at any point in the game.

At the beginning, it looked like they are in small electric cars. It’s rare to have both teammates in the same row. In this case, the cameras were inside mounted versus having a cameraman there. Phil didn’t talk about any of this, which I thought was strange.

The first stop was Stonehenge, but I wish we’d seen a little more of it. From there it was on to Eastnor Castle. I loved this opening challenge that included storming the

castle and crossing the lake in a shell like boat. The bit included a knight in shining armor joust, after which they had knock down a metal knight before getting their clue from the jester.

One gal got hit in the face with a watermelon and made comments about not feeling her face or being able to see straight, so why didn’t the show step in with a doctor to check her out? Yes, it’s a game, but this is the problem. Contestants will always want to march on. Someone has to be responsible.

        Still, great beginning.
