The Virginian: Dark Corridor, from November 1968, is a show I watched primarily for its guest star, John Smith. Smith was in my all time favorite western, Laramie, so I tend to notice when he pops up in some of these old show.

James Drury stars as The Virginian, the man who never falls in love unless she’s unobtainable and doesn’t live in Medicine Bow. That’s pretty much what happens here, yet

again. It’s really too bad that way back in season one they didn’t do more with him and Pippa Scott’s character. That would have been fun.

Instead, we get a lot of situations like the one that this show presents, the Virginian falling for some girl who ends up either dead, being the villain, or having to go away for awhile. Those gals are never seen or heard from again.

      • Actually, nine times out of ten, the ranch foreman is actually away from the ranch when he falls in love.

They do have a nice dance and some sweet moments, but it’s all for naught from the beginning so it’s hard to even care about it too much.

Smith played Caine Ellis, and he did okay, though basically he just looked and sounded menacing. He made a funny sound at one point to make

the horse go nuts, and that really was all he was there for. He had some decent dialog but he was secondary to the romance angle. It was Judy Lang as Elsie Beaumont who was the center of the tale.

The resolution was way too rushed; boom and it’s over, so that was a negative. They had plenty of time, so I really think they could have done a better job with the ending.
