From May 1962, Have Gun - Will Travel: Pandora’s Box was the 35th show of the fifth season for this Richard Boone western series. This outing had some politics to it and those aren’t usually shows I enjoy that much. Basically, Paladin (Boone) is asked to bring in the son of the Secretary who has been accused of murder. The whole scene is very hushed. In fact, Paladin is given a

dozier to read and then told to destroy it. Of course, the gunfighter also makes it clear he will not interfere with due process of law.

Martin West, who I always remember for playing a bit of a two-timing charmer on General Hospital, guest stars as Billy Joe Lamont, the secretary’s son. He did a bit of singing throughout the show, in keeping with the faked innocence and charm that Billy Joe was supposed ...

      • to have.

Paladin has his hands full, not just with Billy Joe, but with a family who is enchanted by him. In fact, Ken Curtis of Gunsmoke fame guest starred as Lucky Laski. When he challenged Paladin, the family covered for Billy Joe. Hannah actually aimed the gun at him, but Paladin orders her to put it down, and she does.

While I enjoyed West’s portrayal, the overall show isn’t anything new. We’ve

seen lots of these stories about guilty men putting on their charm to gain the confidence of others and then turning on them and getting away. Still, it made for an okay show; it just wasn’t a great one.

The other supporting actors were adequate in their roles, but again, they didn’t do anything to really stand out or make a name for themselves. So, all in all, one time is plenty for this episode.
