In its fourth year, Highway Patrol presented this show entitled False Confession, which was the eleventh to air in that air.

This December 1958 outing was a little different in the theme. It’s a story they hadn’t done before, and I like that originality. Basically, a woman turns her husband in for committing a robbery at a warehouse. She wants to collect the $5,000 reward, The truth, though, is that it was all

her husband’s idea. He is desperate for money to take care of the family, and while he intended to rob the place, he actually didn’t get any of the money. He convinces his reluctant wife to go along and call the highway patrol.

Broderick Crawford’s Chief Dan Mathews goes to the home and rather casually confronts the husband, Jim Rogers (Douglas Henderson). It really was almost surreal how calm the entire thing came off.

      In ...

      • what was probably a first, at least that I can recall, for this show, the prisoner escapes from Mathews when they take him to the warehouse to ask some questions. It was a convincing escape, but it was surprising.

This show had some slow moments to it where it felt like a snail was directing the action. For example, when Mathews goes to tell Rogers’ wife about the escape, we see him pull up and walk

to the house. It just took forever.

Eleanore Tanin played the wife. I’ve seen her a couple of times before, and she just never seems to have spark. She does okay, but there’s not enough personality to make her, or the part, stand out in a good way.

So, this episode was different, and I love that uniqueness. There’s even a moment of humor between Mathews and Sergeant Ken Williams (William Boyett) that was fun to see.
