  • Needless to say, I wish I had done a bit more researching, because there was much about Chinchillas I was not aware of, and I believe this is what leads me to think that these are not as great a pet as I once thought
  • It got rather expensive after a while to keep purchasing bedding and dust bath which cost about nine dollars if I wanted to get a good brand that was reliable and did the job

Chinchillas are classified as exotic pets, and that is exactly what I was looking for when I did an online search for deciding on which animal I should welcome into my home. The picture of this furry creature was adorable, and I fell in love immediately. However, there are a few things I did not know about these animals when considering taking them into ones home as household pets. Needless to say, I wish I had done a bit more researching, because there was much about Chinchillas I was not aware of, and I believe this is what leads me to think that these are not as great a pet as

      I once thought.

Chinchillas are part of the rodent family, and do not range very big in size. Their fur is extremely soft, and they have adorable ears similar that of a mouse, there tail however resembles a squirrel. They are nocturnal animals, and enjoy sleeping during the day and playing at night. They need frequent dust baths to keep their fur soft and healthy, chew toys for their teeth, exercise wheels and a balanced diet. However, I had no idea how much time and attention and care that these animals need.

Aside from being cute furry animals that are soft to touch and fun to watch, they honestly do require more attention ...

      • than I had time for. Chinchillas need to run around for thirty minutes a day outside of their cage, which brought up the question of where am I going to put it? Once my Chinchilla outgrew his exercise ball, it was difficult for me to find a place to allow him to run around where he would not get hurt, try and hide from me, and where my two dogs would not get a hold of him. Then there is the frequent times in which the cage needed to be cleaned, which was once a day. It got rather expensive after a while to keep purchasing bedding and dust bath which
cost about nine dollars if I wanted to get a good brand that was reliable and did the job.

I am by no means saying that these animals make for horrible pets, if you have plenty of time on your hands and are able to afford all of the necessary needs of these animals that you will need to purchase frequently, then they would make great pets. For me, with my busy schedule and fixed finances, I was unable to keep up with the care that this animal requires, and I strongly suggest that all those looking to welcome a Chinchilla into their home make sure that they are up for the challenge.
