I am a lover of everything chicken. I love chicken soups of all kind, chicken sausage, chicken patties, chicken sandwiches, canned chicken, etc…. you name it, I’ll love it. I even love “Chicken of the Sea” tuna because the label connotates tuna to chicken. One of my favorite snacks as a child was to pick at the carcass of a roasted chicken after legs, thighs and breasts were eaten. I am one of those people who would choose chicken over steak not for health reasons but because of preference. Having said that, it’s should be understandable why I decided to try the Café Steamer Roasted Chicken Fresca. Well, actually, I also had a coupon for a dollar off and this entrée happen to be on

sale at Wal-Mart Supercenter for $1.66, which means I only paid 66 cents plus tax.

The picture on the box made it look really appetizing – big chunks of chicken with fresh winter vegetables glistening with a light sauce. What was even more amazing were the nutrition facts. Get this: it has 230 calories and only 5 grams of fats. Aside from that, it only has 3 grams of sugar and 550 mg of salt, which is surprising for a healthy packaged food; normally, companies up the sugar and salt to compensate for the lack of fat and flavor. And this product actually had some fiber – about a quarter of the daily recommended amount.

The ingenuity of the Café Steamers is in the apparatus design.

      • It comes in a two-piece bowl made of plastic: one is a bowl that holds the sauce and the second is a sieve-like upper compartment that sits on top of the bowl and holds the chicken and vegetables. The idea is that as it’s being cooked in the microwave, the steam of the sauce warms and flavors the solid ingredient above. The result is the nicely warmed dish with moist meat and vegetables that are cooked just right. The entire entrée was evenly cooked. The chicken was tasty, potatoes weren’t over-cooked, and the winter veggies still had a nice tasty crunch. The sauce was a bit on the bland side but it did it’s best to marry the ingredients together; it didn’t overpower the dish.
My main complaint was the amount of chicken. Yes, it was tasty and moist but number of chicken pieces was so scanty. I could count the number of chicken pieces in one hand. Aside from that, there are no major flaws of this healthy entrée.

Overall, I would recommend this product. I should warn you, however, that is this a entrée for people with a healthy outlook on eating. It may look like a soul-satisfying dish from the picture, but it taste like healthy food. It’s not rich or indulgent; it’s light and nutritious. So you need to enjoy it for what it is. Because it’s so light in calories, you will get hungry soon after. But that’s no problem – just warm up another Café Steamer.
