The Road to Hollywood from 1947 was a biography of sorts about the success of crooner, Bing Crosby. This was the such type of production from filmmaker Bud Pollard who had done a piece like this on Danny Kaye the year before.

Pollard serves as the host of The Road to Hollywood, but he’s just plain awful.

There is no other way to describe it. Seated, he appears to be reading from cue cards or something and then he occasionally glances at the camera.

shows a cyclone grabbing the car and then later depicts a detour. For me, it was the funniest part of the piece.

Other segments follow Crosby as he gets more successful. In truth, he’s not bad in these early movie shorts. I only got bored by the final one, which was shown over a longer stretch.

The Road to Hollywood ends with a grand overview of Crosby’s success up to that point. He was a huge recording star and this movie really built him up, talking about his hit records, his charity with donations, and his family life with wife Dixie.

Overall, it’s an okay piece, notable mostly for the Sennett excerpts.
