Now here is a classic, which some will like and others will not. The movie is Jack and the Beanstalk, a 1952 production that features the comedy team of Abbott and Costello. If you like their humor, you’ll probably enjoy this version of the fairytale classic quite a bit. On the other hand, if this famous duo doesn’t float your boat, you’ll probably want to set sail on this movie.

Abbott plays both Mr. Dinkel and the fantasy Mr. Dinkelpuss, while Lou Costello portrays Jack as well as the fantasy persona of Jack Strong, who takes the beans for the cow and then meets the dreaded giant.

A few notes are of interest about this particular movie. First, it opens in black and white and doesn’t go to color until the fantasy sequence of the fairytale are produced. This is the largest ...

      • portion of the film as well.

Secondly, the bottom of opening credits actually says ‘this is a fable’ which made me laugh for some reason.

Third, Costello is a hoot. He has a great rapport with the young boy he’s supposed to be babysitting. It’s just really funny. This is the lead in for the fantasy as well.

Buddy Baer did okay, but not great, as the giant of the fantasy, while Shaye

Cogan and James Alexander made a rather odd couple. They played two roles as well, being the parents of the boy Jack is babysitting as well as the fantasy story’s prince and princess.

However, Alexander just didn’t have any magic for me. I couldn’t wait for him to be off the screen. Cogan was better, but not by much.

I liked this better as a kid. Now it’s just okay.
