There is a reason why I love watching movies that involved epic wars, adventure and of course, a talented director named Riddley Scott. One such movie is entitled Kingdom of Heaven, a story about the crusaders during the early 11th century. Though it is not a recent movie, I purposedly went to the video store and purchased the DVD in order to rewatch the movie.

The story itself is very engaging; being fast-paced and yet understandible. Orlando Bloom play the protagonist of the movie named Balian, a lowly blacksmith in France who is trying to earn his keep after losing both his wife and child. Then one day, a knight came to his shop,

claiming to be his father, Godfrey the Baron of Ebilin, played by Liam Neeson. First of all, Liam is one of my all-time favorite actors and his presence in this movie creates an aura of a just father who is trying to reclaim a lost son and ask for forgiveness. From their timely meeting, Godfrey is mortally wounded and dies before crossing the great ocean to embark on a journey to Jerusalem and join the crusade. However, he manages to knight his son, Balian, who inherits the title of Baron and journeys to Jerusalem in hopes of finding forgiveness and a new start in life. However, trouble will arise as he will be ...

      • plunged into an escalating war between the Christian King of Jerusalem and the Muslim Arab Leaders led by the great Salahadin.

Being a historical movie, it was important to note that key figures such as the Leper king of Jerusalem and Salahadin were portrayed very well. When one were to watch the movie, time and again, you will get the idea that no side was at fault; no good and no evil. After all, with religion being the source of the war, and Jerusalem made the price, the movie was very clear to show that both sides had principle and the right to claim the Kingdom of Heaven. However, certain things arose; including the

death of the benevolent leper king and the merciful Salahadin’s condition for invading Jerusalem. And just like as it is noted in history books, Jerusalem was taken by Salahadin in the condition for safe travel for its citizens, both Christians and Muslims, to go to safe Christian countries.

Aside from stunning cinematography, screenplay and a splendid cast, the Kingdom of Heaven is a movie worth watching every now and then. Not only is it educational, entertaining, but it also gives one an insight on world views and views on religion. It creates the notion that whether you are Christian or Muslim, as long as you are just, then you are respected by allies and enemies alike.

Riddley Scott seems like a great director and the movie sounds intriguing and with good characters. Kingdom of Heaven shows promise with a very nice title and exceptional story line and great memorable characters.
