Till the Clouds Roll By is a highly fictionalized account of the life and career of composer Jerome Kern. The sad part of this is that Kern was apparently willing to provide information for this movie, but he died before it even went into production. Thus, because the estate was still unsure about things, this 1946 movie doesn’t

have much fact in it, other than the music and shows Kern played a part in and a few bare bones about his life.

So, as true fans of Kern often advocate where this motion picture is concerned, forget the biography aspect and just kick back and enjoy the music. If you want, pretend it’s someone else and have a little lighthearted drama and response; just don’t make the mistake of thinking that it has anything to do with Kern’s real life.

In fact, about fifteen minutes or so of the opening is nothing but songs from Kern’s masterpiece, Show Boat, highlighted by performances from Kathryn Grayson, Tony Martin, Lena Horne, and Caleb Peterson.

another song. What amazes me about this is the setting. She looked like a princess with a beautiful gown as she sat upon the grass. It was very enchanting.

Playing Kern was Robert Walker, who fit the bill okay, but he seemed to just drone at certain points. I know Kern said he was laid back, but

the portrayal was sometimes too sedate.

Some of the other star sightings were June Allyson who just made me smile like she always does, Frank Sinatra, Cyd Charisse, Judy Garland who had a role other than herself, Angela Lansbury, Van Heflin, and Van Johnson.

So, kick back and enjoy the music and production numbers. That’s really the joy of the movie.
