  • I believe this is the first time I really saw Bellamy in a romantic lead, which was different, although while the romance was definitely there, it was really secondary to the relationship of the sisters
  • Burlesque was definitely considered a bad girl thing back in the day

Delightfully Dangerous from 1945 starred a teenaged Jane Powell as Sherry Williams. This is actually the first time I’ve seen her as a teenager and a brunette to boot. I enjoyed her performance, though. She was gay and pretty and gullible, as many girls of the era were in the stereotypical point of view

      of Hollywood.

Also starring in the movie was Ralph Bellamy as Arthur Hale. I believe this is the first time I really saw Bellamy in a romantic lead, which was different, although while the romance was definitely there, it was really secondary to the relationship of the sisters.

Sherry’s older sister, Jo, was played nicely by Constance Moore. Sherry idolizes her, but the conflict comes when she finds out Jo’s alter ego is Bubbles Barton, a burlesque performer. Burlesque was definitely considered a bad girl thing back in the day.

I got a huge kick out of watching Arthur Treacher as Jeffers, Hale’s Butler. Now he was a hoot. Just his stature ...

and demeanor is humorous. He sure had a handle on playing this type of character.

Then there was Louise Beavers as Hannah, Jo’s maid. Like Hattie McDaniel, she had the maid’s role down pat. I love her with Treacher. They worked well together in that decadent ice cream scene.

What I don’t quite kick in

this picture is the logistics and how Sherry was able to catch a train and then carry her suitcase all across the city, including into the burlesque theater. I guess it was just a lot easier to be a kid on your own and not be questioned back then.

Overall, it’s a pleasant story and enjoyable to watch.
