  • There is an interesting twist, which is that every so often - and increasingly so as you progress through the levels to more and more challenging screens - a duck will fly down from the conveyor line towards your stash of bullets, and you must then make sure that you shoot it before it reaches the bottom of the screen
  • As far as graphics are concerned, the choice of Mode 1 means that there are only four colours (black, red, cyan and yellow) but I think that is justified for the extra resolution

You can usually be fairly confident of a game put out by Acornsoft being of good quality, and in the case of Carousel you would be right to have expected it, because it is very smoothly done indeed. This is basically a clone of the classic arcade game “Duck Shoot”, in which you take the part of a competitor at a fairground shooting gallery. Your task is to shoot down as many of the targets as possible before your bullets run out. It sounds very simple, and in essence it is, but as I played I came to realise that it was very carefully thought out and well programmed.

Since this is an Acornsoft game, I was not particularly surprised to find that there was rather more to Carousel than the rather simple explanation of its basic aim might have suggested. For a start, there are three

different animal targets on the conveyor belts - ducks, owls and squirrels - all of which score a different number of points. On top of this, the letters of the word BONUS are also available to be shot at, and as you might expect when you have accounted for all of them you do indeed score a bonus!

There is an interesting twist, which is that every so often - and increasingly so as you progress through the levels to more and more challenging screens - a duck will fly down from the conveyor line towards your stash of bullets, and you must then make sure that you shoot it before it reaches the bottom of the screen. If you do not, then it will steal some of your ammunition, which will obviously make your job a big harder. Remember, when you are out of bullets the ...

      • game is over! Luckily, from a little way into the first level, boxes start to appear on the conveyor labelled “5″ and “10″, and if you manage to shoot one of these your ammo stock will be replenished by that amount.

Not only do you have these items to shoot at, but above the score box in the top centre of the screen is a representation of a revolving big wheel, and you are required to shoot each of the arms of this as well, with the level not finishing until you have got all of them. Only at that stage will the level be considered over and only then will you be allowed to advance to a more difficult shooting challenge. Before that happens, you may get a rather fun bonus screen, where you can earn hundreds of points by hitting a target being carried across

the screen by a polar bear!

The sound and graphics are really well done, with a fair few very nice touches. For example, although as a default a cheery fairground style tune plays at all times, if you want to you can expend one of your bullets on shooting a box containing a musical note at the extreme right of the screen - and if you do, the game goes silent! Do it again, and the music is back. As far as graphics are concerned, the choice of Mode 1 means that there are only four colours (black, red, cyan and yellow) but I think that is justified for the extra resolution. The animation is pretty impressive, with a lot of simultaneous movement on the screen. I think Carousel might get a bit repetitive after a long period of play, but for a simple blast it is recommended.
