From 1936, Gene Autry stars in a double role in The Big Show. As the country singer and actor often did, his ‘nice’ guy role uses his real name of Gene Autry. In this case, he’s a stuntman who sings. His other part is that of the big name actor, Tom Ford.

The conflict happens when Ford goes off on a vacation without being told that he was expected to attend

the Texas Centennial. In a pickle, the public relations man convinces Autry to pretend to be Ford. It goes over perfectly, until Autry sings, and everyone thinks it is really Ford.

Things escalate and the studio head decides to make singing westerns starring Tom Ford. This means Autry has to keep on pretending. Of course, this leads to problems, too, like attempted blackmail when some bad guys find out what ...

      • is really happening.

Autry is as good as he ever is. It’s hard to critique someone who plays himself in everything. He has a mild mannered look about him, an unassuming sort who is highly confident and well able to take care of himself. He’s also a man of honor and integrity in just about every movie he did.

Equally famous just about is Autry’s horse, Champion. Of course, I’m an

animal lover, and I can’t stand to see tripwires and such used to make horses tumble. That’s why I don’t watch more of these. My heart stops every time I see one.

Smiley Burnette is the sidekick, helping to provide moments of comic relief throughout the picture, and there is a girl. After all, what is a cowboy with a cowgirl to go along with his horse?

        Overall, it’s a pleasant movie.
