From 1929, a real oldie, High Voltage features Carole Lombard, whose career was cut much to short by a tragic plane crash many years after this early movie of hers was released. Basically, a bus carrying a couple of woman to prison gets stranded out in a snowstorm and end up taking shelter at a small cabin in the middle of nowhere. The group has to share the occupant’s flimsy

provisions which at best will last ten days.

Lombard is gorgeous and very strong in her role. She ultimately teams up with the occupant of the cabin, a man named Bill, who is played by William Boyd. As it turns out, he has a secret, too, but he lets her in on it. After that, they decide to take off.

Ultimately, though, they go for the good decision to help save ...

      • the others who are with them, instead of being selfish and continuing on alone.

There’s a lot more to the story, including the man who has extradition papers for Boyd’s character. There’s actually a really nice moment for him late in the movie.

There are some playful scenes out in the snow and showing the beauty and expanse of the mountains. For 1929, it was good stuff.

The movie even features a couple

of songs to entertain the masses. For the most part, I actually liked them and felt entertained.

The production is naturally pretty primitive compared to what we have in today’s very technologically advanced society, and yet, they get the job done. The story is told quickly, in just over an hour, so the plot is very contained in that regard.

The highlight is really seeing the young Lombard turning in an early, solid performance.
