Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light Review

I’ve never been a fan of the Tomb Raider series but this new iteration had me interested because of its new feature-co-op mode. I didn’t think that this game would be a lot different from the others before it but to my surprise, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is actually a pretty fun game to play. The game stars two protagonists- Lara and Totec (the guardian of Light)- out to save the world. Though the game’s story is a bit so-so, the game makes up to it with its fine gameplay and lots of options.

The game is graphically beautiful with environments that are intricately detailed. The

game looks so damn good that the faults are more easily noticeable than they normally would. For example, many objects are destructible and look great in explosions, but then the pieces may immediately vanish as they hit the ground.

Aside from the greatly enhanced graphics, the game developers did away with the exclusively one player game and included a two-player co-op mode which is a blast to play with friends. Guardian of Light also fits for an arcade game because it is about racking up high scores and enjoying some friendly rivalry with a partner. Killing enemies and finding hidden treasures earn you points which can be compared with scores with everyone on the international leader boards. Earning enough points on a level allow you to receive a new weapon or upgrade. Also, each stage has optional Challenge Tombs filled with puzzles to solve that offer valuable artifacts and relics. The artifacts and relics can be equipped to your character in order to considerably improve their skills. And then there are the lots of Reward Challenges in each level that grant weapons and items for completing random tasks. There are loads of in the game to keep you interested.

There are loads of weapons to find and customize. And the characters (Lara or Totec) may equip weapons four at a time. Guardian of Light is a kind of a dual-stick shooter that ...

has you running around with the left stick and aiming with the right stick. The action is exceedingly fulfilling and it’s entertaining to experiment with the many weapons. Totec the Guardian of Light wielding military guns is simply hilarious.

The puzzles are ingeniously designed to require the particular talents of both Lara and Totec. Experimenting and trying different approaches when encountering puzzles is the way to go until you and your partner eventually solve it together. This adds up to the entire experience of the game.

Those who are against socialization can also have a sigh of relief because Guardian of Light remains a good game even if you’re playing solo. The game doesn’t give you an

AI partner. Instead, you’ll encounter slightly tweaked versions of the puzzles that are possible to solve on your own. Dropping in and out of play (ala Marvel Ultimate Alliance) is not possible because the single-player and cooperative games differ significantly.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is a step into the right direction by Crystal Dynamics. This is one of the best co-op games on the market and can also stand its ground against most single-player games out there. Too bad the story is not at par with its gameplay. But with tons of replay value both as a one player and a two player game, this is one title that is simply hard to put down.
