The Great Guy is a movie from the vintage days of Hollywood. It stars James Cagney as Johnny Cave, who works for the Department of Weights and Measures. He gets a fast promotion when his boss is suddenly injured.

Actually, this was a funny moment for me. When Cave goes to visit, I saw the injured man with his arm in a really odd sling. I was thinking it looked like

a musical instrument, and sure enough, when he’s leaving that’s what Cave says in a joking manner. It was almost like a trombone.

There’s a neat bit when Cave gets the goods on a market and how they add to the weight of baskets to make the food cost more. I loved that. Then he’s off to a gas station and catches some guy there. It’s the kind of thing that ...

      • the little guy enjoys seeing. You just know it still goes on today.

Working for this department isn’t all fun, unfortunately, and Cave finds himself kidnapped and then framed. He’s put in different clothing and doused with liquor. Then he’s cleared by the man who set him up. It’s a warning of sorts.

For a Cagney film, this piece is pretty charming in its own way. Cave is engaged to be

married, and absolutely all of his scenes with his bride to be are enchanting and many of them are, in fact, funny. Mae Clarke plays the role of Cave’s girlfriend, and she’s really good. I enjoyed her part very much.

Overall, I enjoyed The Great Guy very much. It was unexpected in many ways, and that increased my enjoyment level. Cagney was great, and it was just a nice piece to view.
