Recently I learned about lubuntu, a linux distribution based on Ubuntu that aims to creat a faster and more lightweight version of Ubuntu. This is done replacing a few applications with others. The main difference is the desktop used as lubuntu replaces the Gnome desktop, wich is the default on Ubuntu, with LXDE, the Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment.

Like so many other lightweight linux distributions (e.g. Slax, Puppy, Feather or Damn Small Linux), lubuntu is targeted at users with old or low-spec computers, those with old pentium II or celeron processors with about

128mb of RAM memory, but unlike other light distros, lubuntu has the great advantage of being based on Ubuntu. That means that all the applications available on Ubuntu’s repositories can be installed on lubuntu so it is suited also for all the current Ubuntu users who want a lighter system.

Lubuntu’s developers chose to replace a few applications with others to make the system run faster and just remove other applications to make more room. Gnome got replaced with LXDE but even a few applications included on this desktop enviroment gor removed (LXMusic ...

      • is one of those, instead the Aqualung audio player and gnome-mplayer got included). Firefox browser got replaced with Chromium, the open source project behind Google’s Chrome. There’s no OpenOffice (OOo) anymore and the only office applications are Abiword, Gnumeric, Osmo and ePDFViewer. On the internet side it do includes the Pidgin instant messenger and the Transmission Bittorrent client. All Ubuntu’s configuration tools got included so using lubuntu is as easy as Ubuntu has always been. This is great for new comers as they will find a clean system with all the tools
at hand to help them configure the system.

lubuntu 10.04 is not a long-term-support version like Ubuntu 10.04 is, it’s not supposed to be a final version yet but the experience I’ve had using it has been excellent. This is definitely a distro to watch and follow. The great thing is that, like Ubuntu, it is a live distribution so all that’s needed to try it is burning it to a CD (or copying to an USB flash drive) and boot from it. Give it a try, linux as powerful as always and easier than ever.
