Lucid Puppy is a Puppy Linux Distribution, it is an operating system that uses the linux kernel, GNU utilities and a lot of other free software. Puppy Linux has always been a live-cd distribution aimed for being used on old (or just low-tech) computers like those with slow processors or short on RAM memory (128 MB to say something), and this new version, number 5.0.1, continue the same, it’s well suited for old computers and it has the same easy and simple interface that previous versions had but it do have something new: it is based on Ubuntu 10.04, Lucid Lynx, thus the name Lucid Puppy.

      So what’s the big deal

about Lucid Puppy being based on Ubuntu? For what I have seen the main difference between this versions and the ones from 4.2 branch is the speed. Lucid Puppy loads really fast. There’s something new too, Lucid Puppy now comes with what they call “QuickPet”, an application with one-click installer for the most common and pupular Linux software like audacity, the gimp, inkscape and many browsers including Chromium (the free project that supports Google Chrome), Firefox and Opera, this way installing software on puppy linux is easier.

More speed and a small software repository are the things that I found new on this Puppy Linux release but those are not all ...

      • the changes. The great thing is that this release was built from an Ubuntu one and while this doesn’t mean that Lucid Puppy is an Ubuntu-based distribution (and therefore Debian-based) it has some level of compatibility. This is really awesome because Ubuntu is one of the most popular Linux Distributions so if Puppy can become compatible with it, all the software from Ubuntu’s repositories will be also available for Puppy. Right now that’s not possible, Lucid Puppy includes the “dpkg” package, wich is the package used on debian systems for installing .deb binaries, and it is possible to install a few programs downloaded Ubuntu’s repositories but it is still not
possible to install the “apt-get” package manager, but that will be possible on future Puppy releases so Puppy Linux is just getting more exciting.

And now just to came back to the review: Lucid Puppy is a great Puppy Linux release, it is fast and has all the basics for a regular user. It is great not only for old computers because as it has a really reduced size all it’s software gets loaded on the RAM memory (if there is enough available), freeing the CD-ROM drive for any other use. The fact that this release is based on Ubuntu make Lucid Puppy a very interesting project that sure deserves to be followed.
