One of the final episodes of the first season, The Andy Griffith Show: The Inspector began with a classic scene of Barney playing checkers against himself. Now it’s a hoot, but haven’t we all done something like this before? I think that’s why it works so well. Even though Andy makes fun of

it, we can all identify with it. Hey, decades later on my favorite science fiction program, Stargate SG-1, Colonel Jack O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) was playing chess by himself. Like I said, it’s relatable.

The crux of this show, as the title would indicate, is that a state inspector is coming to look over the jail. Barney’s all nervous about it, but Andy isn’t worried. They actually have a couple of stories like this from throughout the run of the series, but this was the first one. The trouble occurs when the inspector isn’t the usual one, and this guy means business.

the all-too-serious inspector who thinks Mayberry needs an overhaul. He’s definitely overzealous.

I do like the scene between father and son when Opie brings something to Andy and tells him he’s the best sheriff, even if he doesn’t carry a gun. That one always gets a chuckle.

We also have perennial favorite moments, like Barney putting

his bullet in his gun and misfiring and then Andy and Barney ending up in a locked cell.

There’s a bit of camp in the half hour, but so much of it brings on chuckles that it really doesn’t matter all that much, and I do think Andy is a bit nonchalant about potential nasty situations, but that’s his character.
