From November 1957, Highway Patrol: Safecracker was the fourth outing of this police drama’s third season. It was actually a very calm show, I thought. It was easy to watch with nothing that really screamed ‘I’m great’ and nothing that moaned of it being horrible. It made for an entertaining half hour, while not being a standout in any way.

Highway Patrol: Safecracker follows Stanley Wright, a safecracker, and his accomplice wife,

as they commit various crimes. Actually, she doesn’t really participate until the end, but she’s totally aware and supportive of what her husband is doing.

Wright is on parole, so he does get pulled in for questioning. That ends up resulting in California Highway Patrol Chief Dan Mathews putting one of his men on Wright’s trail. I did like that the tracker was sharp and not fooled by Wright’s plan at the ...

What I liked about the story is that it was easy going and that it showed something not seen on the show before, which was the safecracker. Even more so, this guy didn’t crack the safes with an explosive, but he was a true safecracker, listening to the tumbles of the safe’s combination. That was fun.

There were some poor directing choices in my opinion on how some of the action towards the

end was handled. Where people made their moves and such was a bit odd in my view. Conversely, this is one of the few times I’ve seen an arrested person padded down before being placed inside the patrol car. That’s way overdue.

Overall, the show was decent. Brett King and Julie Bennett as the Wrights were solid guest stars. William Boyett was superb in his all too brief bit as Officer Johnson, too.
