One of the things I’ve learned to like about the Sea Hunt TV series is that they oftentimes do a nice job of educating their viewers on the dangers of diving without proper training. Several subjects come up not just once, but several times over the course of the series. Sometimes a subject will get a whole show devoted to it and then still get mentions off and on, serving

as part of the drama on other episodes. That’s the case with something called nitrogen narcosis, also known as rapture of the deep.

This ill effect that can occur has been the subject of a complete episode and here, in Sea Hunt: Base of Operations from September 1959, it’s a part of the drama. I just really like the fact that situations like this are reviewed throughout the years the show ...

      • was on the air.

In this episode, Mike Nelson, as played by Lloyd Bridges, is setting up an underwater base with all the necessary supplies, like spare tanks, water bottles, and a fully equipped first aid kit. While doing so, he’s approached by a couple of divers who request his help and training, which he says no to for the moment.

Naturally, they ignore Nelson’s warnings and attempt to do dive anyway.

Nelson then has to rescue them. That’s when we get a lot of narration about nitrogen narcosis and the playful illusions it can sometimes cause, as well as deadly hallucinations, like here when the husband thinks his wife is a sea monster and tries to kill her.

Sea Hunt: Base of Operations is a solid half hour episode which I enjoyed watching for the lesson and the entertainment. The underwater shots are very good.
