Glacial Lakes State Park is a very unique state park. It’s a transition zone between prairies and hardwood forests. The huge, steep rolling hills and deep valleys were sculpted by glaciers and they make the hiking trails fun and challenging. A wide variety of native prairie species grow at the park and all the native flowers add to the area’s unique beauty.

The biggest lake in the park is Mountain Lake which is located shortly after the park entrance. This lake has very clear water and is very beautiful. Just looking at the clarity of the water gives you feelings

of how pristine this area is. People can swim and fish in the lake. I like watching fish in the clear water. We also saw a beaver and several different kinds of birds enjoying the lake. Several campsites can be found around the lake, and a hiking trail completely surrounds the lake.

A couple hours before sunset we explored the kettles and kames which are also prairie lands. Watching the sunset while sitting on a bench at the top of a kame was amazing. Seeing the colors change slowly across the sky when you are surrounded by a very unique,

      • spectacular landscape is awesome.

After sunset we began hiking back to the car when we literally got attacked by mosquitoes. Before starting to hike we applied a lot of Off Deep Woods repellent. The mosquitoes had to be very hungry because the repellent did not work at all. They continuously attacked us and even bit us through clothing. When we left the park we stopped for ice cream in Starbuck, and used the cold cups to soothe our multiple mosquito bites. I probably would not visit this state park again during the summer, but will go again during spring and

autumn when mosquito populations are lower.

Autumn is a wonderful time to visit Glacial Lakes State Park because the awesome prairie colors combined with colorful leaves creates a vividly beautiful, colorful landscape that expands over both the land and trees. Glacial Lakes State Park is an incredibly unique area that I highly recommend visiting. The views are exhilarating! Kids and adults can learn a lot about geology from the park’s trail map and interpretive trail (located along part of Mountain Lake). Do not forget to take along a camera to capture some of those awesome life-long memories of nature’s true beauty.
