      GG Allin’s 1987 release was his first LP that defined the point when his music took a turn away from the classic, catchy punk he had been making since the late 70s, towards what some call absolute garbage. Whether it was for the better or for the worse can easily be disputed. It highly differs from 1983’s hardcore punk “E.M.F”, and his output with the Jabbers, bringing in many different sounds and influences. As with any GG Allin record, some may find “You Give Love A Bad Name” to be a masterpiece, while others will call it complete garbage.

      The album marks GG Allin’s shift towards rock and country influenced punk that would dominate his later releases. While the album does contain a few punk tracks, hard rock and punkabilly are prominent. Unlike the vast majority of GG’s albums, this one contains no obvious filler. Two earlier songs, “Tough F**king Sh*t” and “Blood For You” (re-titled “I’m A Rapist” with different lyrics”, were re-recorded for the album. There are also two covers, “Beer Picnic” and “Garbage Dump”, which were done quite well. The overall sound of the album is a bit sloppy, but


      it’s a very good record. The tracks were well laid out in a good order, starting off with punkabilly, going to harder rock, taking a punk break, going back to hard rock, and ending with the phenomenal Charles Manson cover. It has a lot of diversity, having no more than three songs of a particular style, which makes it anything but boring. The recording quality is on par for low budget punk- very raw with poor bass response. I feel it adds character to the album.

      Differing from GG Allin’s notable high-pitched, somewhat nasily vocals, his album was among the first to feature GG Allin’s low, distorted growl. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work as well on the album as it could have. The backing vocals are sloppy poorly timed and make the overall vocals on the album a complete mess. If the backing vocals weren’t there, it would have easily been a lot better.

      1: “Swank F**kin” 9/10

      The album starts with an awesome punkabilly track. The song’s chord progression is simple and almost monotone, but somehow it works with the song quite well.

      2: “Bloody Mary’s Bloody C*nt” 10/10

        3: “Tough F*ckin’ Sh*t” 8/10

        This is a faster version of the song originally recorded with GG Allin’s post-Scumfucs band, The Cedar Street Sluts. While I prefer the slower original version, this one is still pretty good. It has a bit of rockabilly influence that makes it exceptionally catchy. The lyrics are awesome, being about not giving a damn about others finding fault in an uncanny lifestyle. Definitely a must hear.

        4: “I’m A Rapist” 7/10

        For those who know the earlier song “Blood For You”, this is merely a harder re-worked version with different lyrics. It’s a good song, but it’s not anything special. Worth hearing if you want, but it’s okay to skip this one.

        5: “Suck Dog” 8/10

        A little more rock-oriented, the fifth track is yet another shift in the album’s sound. Definitely a good song, don’t skip it.

        6: “Teenage Twats” 10/10

        This track is simply awesome. The C#/B/G# riff compliments the slow-mid pace perfectly. The lyrics are a little disturbing, but like every other song on the record, you can’t really understand them anyway. One of the premier songs, it is second only to “Garbage Dump” as being the best song on the album.

        7: “Beer Picnic” 6/10

        About the closest to

        filler material as you can get without it being true filler. It is a slow cover of the Bad Tuna song recorded and released after being denied permission. It’s melodic, it contains an excuse for singing, so it can be called a song. The “worst” song on the album, even though it’s not really that bad.

        8: “Stink Finger Clit” 9/10

        Punky yet hard, this song kicks a**. One of my favorite GG tracks.

        9: “Scars On My Body, Scabs On My D*ck” 9/10

        More rock than anything else, the second to last song is certainly killer. Not one to skip.

        10: “Garbage Dump” 10/10

        The best song on the album by far. Best punk cover of an acoustic folk song I have ever heard. The A#/F riff is amazing. The vocals are somewhat sung. Everything works in harmony with eachother. If there is one song you have to listen to on the whole album, this is it.

        Overall this is a really goood album in my opinion. But of course, you will have your critics and the people who think it is a pile of garbage. Being a hardcore GG Allin fan, I find this to be one of his best records. “You Give Love A Bad Name” has a sure place on my list of GG Allin records you simply can’t go wrong with. Definite 10/10.
