From August 1959, Sea Hunt: Underwater Unit is a second season outing of this half hour, black and white adventure show that circulates around Lloyd Bridges’ character of Mike Nelson, ex-Navy frogman who is considered one of the best skin divers out there. I mention all of this because this is another episode where Nelson ends up doing some kind of spy related work. Ultimately, he ends up assisting in the rescue of

a woman being held by the bad guys.

Of course, at the beginning of the show, Nelson hasn’t a clue about all of that. He’s actually trying to determine how much water affects a bullet’s force. The narration at the beginning informs us that Nelson doesn’t know why those who have hired him are conducting the tests, but he’s going along, doing it as a favor for a friend who asked him not ...

      • to ask questions.

As I’ve often said, Nelson is a very trusting man and oddly naive for this type of character. That fascinates me. It’s not a big part of this show, but it often comes into play in other programs.

One of the memorable portions of this show is seeing the perils of being caught in underwater currents play out. The water always looks so calm, but it’s really very perilous sometimes, and we

        get to see that.

The last 1/3rd is all narration because it’s the rescue. Sometimes, this seems to be just too much. I’m not as fond of these Nelson on a mission shows like this one is.

The guest cast is decent, and the front third that deals with the testing is fun, and I admit to being interested in how Nelson gets to the truth of things. All in all, it’s a decent outing.
