Cheat the Grave is the stellar fifth book in the Signs of the Zodiac series by Vicki Pettersson. This series revolves around the life of Joanna Archer who comes into her superhero powers on her twenty-fifth birthday, and she never even knew she came from a matriarchal line of superheros. She’s the archer sign of the zodiac, and is also the Kairos which is the being who will tip the scales of balance between the light and shadow sides of the zodiac. Where there is a

light sign of the zodiac, there is a shadow sign, and they are all parts of their own troops. Each city has a troop for light and shadow, and they are constantly fighting to tip the scales in their favor.

But Joanna was born from a shadow agent, her father, and a light agent, her mother, and it’s her dual nature that plays a massive role in this fifth book, because after giving up her powers to save a mortal child, her troop kicks her ...

      • out since she’s relatively useless to them, and she is on her own, though the shadow side still wants to kill her and she has no super powers to fight them. She teams up with a troop of rogue agents, who call themselves The Grays, neither light nor shadow, to bring about the death of her father, the leader of the shadow troop, gain invisibility, and travel to a mystical world to release the souls of captive men, including her ex boyfriend!

        This story is complicated,

and highly unbelievable, but it’s totally fun and I found myself getting wrapped up in it from the very first page. The characters are all endearing, and there’s a serious twist or two in the end of this book that leaves me panting with baited breath for the next installment in the series, which isn’t due out for another couple months. You wont be disappointed with the series as a whole, or with this book in particular, which is my favorite of the five so far!
