Scent of Shadows is the first book in the Signs of the Zodiac series by Vicki Pettersson. Usually, superhero books are not my cup of tea, but there was something mystical about the story line that I found immediately captivating. The book starts out with Joanna Archer on a blind date only to discover that her date is a stinky evil agent of shadows from the shadow side of the Zodiac. And, as she makes her escape, she discovers that she’s

an agent for the light side of the zodiac, a gift passed on to her through her mother, since all powers are passed on through a matriarchal line. As soon as she hits her twenty fifth birthday, she’ll come into her full powers, but in the meantime, she has to stay alive, because she’s now emitting a powerful scent that all the shadows can latch on to and track her with.

You really fall in love with this character after reading ...

      • about her horrible past, during which she was raped as a teen, coming home from a date with her boyfriend Ben. She finds out she’s pregnant, gives the baby up, thinking it’s the offspring of her rapist, and then when she becomes a super hero, she realizes that her rape was orchestrated by the shadow side of the zodiac! And not only that, but it was orchestrated by her own father, who runs the shadow troop. Her mother went into hiding
to protect the identity of her daughter, but leaves her clues and helps her along the way of becoming an agent of the light herself. Then she finds out she’s the Kairos, which is a supernatural being said to tip the scales in favor of either the shadow or light, so both sides are after her for their own selfish purposes.

It’s an excellent book chalk full of humor and action, and an unbelievable twist on comic books. You’ll love it.
