Spartacus (1960) tells the tale of the legendary slave named Spartacus and how he was a gladiator who escaped with others to lead a slave rebellion against the Roman Empire in order to escape to freedom.

While not historically accurate to the true story of Spartacus, this film is still very magnificent to watch and it just reminds you of how they used to make movies.

      Kirk

Douglas was great as Spartacus, giving the character just the right feel and you are sympathetic to him. Laurence Olivier is great as Crassus and he is also very good in this role. Jean Simmons is a great actress and she plays Varinia perfectly.

The visual effects are astounding for this movie, and when I say that, I’m being serious as this was made before CGI ...

      • effects and the large battle scenes were done with hundreds, if not thousands of extras. It doesn’t look cheesy or old despite being made over forty years ago.

I enjoyed this film a lot and I highly recommend it if you like the sword and sandal genre. It’s well acted and very well done, with some artistic liberties and historical inaccuracies, but despite all

that it’s a classic film. If you like any of the actors in it you’ll enjoy this movie. I was impressed and it was a long movie, it’s over three hours, but you can fast forward the intermission and the opening credits. It’s definitely worth your time and you should try to watch it.

You can find Spartacus on DVD online at Amazon.com or at your local library.
