  • That said, I think it is undeniable that a tin of Heinz baked beans will taste significantly nicer than these, to most people's taste buds at least, and if you are making a dish (such as beans on toast) where the beans themselves are a major part of the taste, then I would not recommend buying these very cheap ones

Baked beans in tomato sauce are about the most basic of all basics when it comes to British cooking, since we eat far more baked beans than just about any other country in the world. Sainsbury’s budget “Basics” range therefore carries a fairly good selection of similar products, but these are the straightforward and simple version. Considering that a 420 gram tin costs the almost ridiculously low price of 29 pence, they would have to

be dreadful for me to completely rule out recommending them, and they aren’t.

However, if you ...

      • are making a mixed dish and the beans are simply there to add a bit of bulk and texture, then it is another story, and I would have no qualms about using these.

For some reason, these beans come from Italy. I don’t have anything strongly against that, but I do find it a little bit odd. Those of you who need (or just like) to watch your salt intake ought to be aware that these

beans are not specially reduced in salt as some more expensive brands are, so they should only be eaten in moderation. At least they are pretty low in calories, though, and being gluten free they can also be eaten by coeliacs. To sum up, these are handy beans to have in reserve to add to a recipe, but they are not really high enough in quality that I would want to use them for entertaining.
