  • I had mixed feelings about that at the time, partly since at the age of 39 I don't think it's very likely that James is going to play in another major championhsip, but I could understand the thinking behind the move
  • James is sometimes given the nickname Calamity James , but I think that's rather unfair nowadays
  • He's also known for his strange haircuts and for being one of the more thoughtful members of the England squad, having written an interesting weekly column in The Guardian throughout the English season
  • In the World Cup games, James has often been the best of a bad bunch, with most of the outfield players either doing little of any note or actively disgracing themselves with their lack of heart and skill

After the dreadful mistake made by Robert Green in England’s opening World Cup 2010 match (against the United States) it was not really a surprise to most people (certainly not to me) that coach Fabio Capello decided to make a change, and to bring in the hugely experienced David James between the posts. When he was younger he did used to make some howlers every so often, but he has become much more reliable in recent years - it can’t have been much fun playing for Portsmouth last season, after all, so it was impressive that he kept his ...

In the World Cup games, James has often been the best of a bad bunch, with most of the outfield players either doing little of any note or actively disgracing themselves with their lack of heart and skill. He hasn’t always got it

right - I think he could have done a little bit better with one of the German goals, for example - but he has at least managed to make some very secure catches and a few nice saves, which should have given the rest of the side some impetus to go forward with confidence. The fact that they generally didn’t is not really James’ fault, and I think he’s still a good goalkeeper - just an increasingly old one!
