  • EXP is a song by The Jimi Hendrix Experience which appears on the album Axis
  • The track continues on with some major guitar feedback form Hendrix which is meant to mimic the sound of a spaceship taking off, and to be perfectly honest I think it sounds pretty good
  • EXP always just sort of struck me as a very odd opener to this record, but to be honest, what Hendrix did with the guitar feedback may at first just seem to be a bunch of random noise but the work done on it in the studio to make it shift back and forth between channels and also play heavily on dynamics gives the feedback a very interesting sound which actually works surprisingly well with the theme of the song

EXP is a song by The Jimi Hendrix Experience which appears on the album Axis: Bold As Love. EXP opens up this record and starts off with a very brief guitar bit which is basically the same thing as Stone Free.

The song then quickly shifts into a sort of newscast where a broadcaster, who is really Mitch Mitchell, is discussing the subject of aliens and UFOs who is going to be doing an interview on the subject.

The person being interviewed, who is really Hendrix, has an effect on his voice

which gradually makes it slow down and get deeper before you hear a spaceship-like noise.

Basically what you hear is a conversation between a newscaster and an alien which quite an unconventional way to open up a record.

The track continues on with some major guitar feedback form Hendrix which is meant to mimic the sound of a spaceship taking off, and to be perfectly honest I think it sounds pretty good.

The feedback goes back and forth between the left and right channels and it also plays heavily with dynamics as ...

      • it gets quiet in some sections and then very loud in others so it actually sounds quite realistic to be honest.

EXP always just sort of struck me as a very odd opener to this record, but to be honest, what Hendrix did with the guitar feedback may at first just seem to be a bunch of random noise but the work done on it in the studio to make it shift back and forth between channels and also play heavily on dynamics gives the feedback a very interesting sound which actually

works surprisingly well with the theme of the song.

This intro to the record may seem random but the next track on Axis, Up From The Skies, is a song which deals about an alien returning to Earth so it actually ties in quite nicely.

EXP is certainly not a conventional song and if you’re not one for guitar effects and feedback, then this isn’t a track to be listening to.

However, if you’re into the wide variety of sounds you can achieve from a guitar, this is an interesting song to listen to.
