Ever since I started listening to Sigur Ros, I have been entranced by their music. Large, sweeping guitar lines and fragile vocals that could be likened to whale song, their music ought to be the very definition of the recently-dubbed genre they are attributed to: ‘landscape rock’ [though also known as ’shoegazer rock’].

“Takk” is their newest venture since their last album and first widespread success, “Agaetis

      Byrjun.

” “Takk” is a lighter, slightly more conventional album with it’s shorter, more numerous, more structured songs.

I find it to be wonderfully uplifting and moving at many points along: a strong example being the playful, ambling venture that is ‘Hoppipola’.

      • melody, and a electric guitar [which the lead singer plays with a cello bow].

The title of that song translates to something like ‘hopping in puddles’, an image repeated in the music video.

As the band has developed it’s style, it has also developed it’s lyrics, with their own sort of made up dialect of their native Icelandic, called “Hopelandic”, which they sometimes stray in and out

        of in the music.

I would reccommend this album to even the most conservative rock fan or adversary of foreign things.

Bands like Sigur Ros make the universality of music more apparent.

Sure, those who can understand Icelandic may find more to be found in the lyrics, but sincerity of the music and the jubilant, sometimes haunting emotion in the singer’s voice is no less clear or powerful for it.
