This is probably one of the most visually stunning, thought-provoking pieces of entertainment I’ve seen in over 20 years. It was directed by Alex Proyas, who also directed ‘The Crow” a few years prior. His ability to express substance through his style comes through in every character, every scene, and every frame.

Technology has advanced by leaps and bounds since 1998 and might make Dark City’s effects look like

a no-brainer, but quite frankly, that’s not the point. What made Dark City special was the story that put those effects in motion, the ideas behind those effects.

One of the most notable aspects of the story is its use of symbolism. If you haven’t seen the film, pay close attention to the room number of the main character’s apartment at the beginning of the film. Connect that with the main character’s name, and note ...

      • the Biblical reference. The film does an exceptional job with such clues that the viewer gets a feel for the level of transcendence that that filmmakers had in mind, without the film feeling overtly dogmatic.

Another noteworthy quality to the film is its blend of genres. This has elements of a police procedural, film noir, science fiction / fantasy, a whodunit, a romance, and a thriller, without clinging to any one of the rules

of any particular genre. This is a testament to the film’s originality and daring, and frankly, not many, if any, major studios would have been brave enough to take on a film that defies categorization.

Dark City should not only be in every film buff’s DVD collection, but should be studied by film students, whether in a class, seminar, or on their own. For any science fiction / fantasy movie fan, I cannot recommend it highly enough.
