Wilburton, OK
  • There were a lot of people on the campground, which in my experience doesn't always end peacefully
  • It took us a good 20 minute climb to get to the top of these rock cliffs (which was well worth it since you get the best of the scenery up top), and when I laid my eyes on this cave I must say I was a little bummed

Recently I went to Robbers Cave State Park in Wilburton, OK for a family reunion. I must say, I was a little skeptical when we arrived.

There were a lot of people on the campground, which in my experience doesn’t always end peacefully.

There were also park rangers everywhere, which for safety reasons I was relieved, but if you’re just trying to get away from it all, that’s the last thing you want to see driving through your campsite every

      half hour.

But the three days I spent there were phenomenal.

This place is unbelievably beautiful! Nothing but trees and rock cliffs in this place, which might sound dull to some, but for someone who lives in the city it makes for quite the experience.

We rode horseback through the intermediate trails through the woods, went rock climbing, and we were even directed to the most popular fishing spots, where we caught some monstrous catfish.

      Now for the best part.

      • Robber’s Cave is an actual cave where Jesse James used to hide! Considering my growing interest in Jesse James since the movie “Jesse” came out with Brad Pitt, I wanted to see this cave.

It took us a good 20 minute climb to get to the top of these rock cliffs (which was well worth it since you get the best of the scenery up top), and when I laid my eyes on this cave I must say I was

        a little bummed.

It looked more like a big crevice in the side of a rock, and not much else.

I guess my imagine had taken over me and I expected too much.

Aside from the experience with the cave, I am so satisfied with this park I will definitely be taking my kids to camp there next summer.

The scenery was gorgeous and the staff couldn’t have been better!
