Apocalypto is a movie directed by Mel Gibson. It was released soon after the scandal that occurred when Mel Gibson was pulled over for drunk driving and went on a tirade against Jewish people. For this reason, many people didn’t see the movie when it came out in theaters. Mel Gibson had become very unpopular. Although the movie was a failure at the box office, it got good reviews. One reviewer called it “the best movie you’ve never seen.”

      The movie is

about a young man who is part of a South American tribe in pre-colonial days. He and his friends live a peaceful existence in their small village. His wife is pregnant and expecting a baby, and his life is happy. Then disaster strikes — his village is invaded by fierce warriors who kill most of the women and taken the men captive. He manages to hide his wife in a chasm, where she becomes trapped, and he is unable to rescue her ...

      • and must leave her behind. His wife is pregnant and alone with only her young daughter as company as her husband and the other men are taken away. It soon becomes apparent that this tribe from the Mayan city has invaded in order to find humans to sacrifice to their gods. It is up to the captives to try and escape this fate.

The story was very exciting. I really root for the characters. One thing that made the movie difficult to

understand was that it was subtitled, with all the dialogue in an ancient language. After a while though, I got used to reading the subtitles and this was not too much of a problem. The movie kept me very much engaged, hoping that all will turn out well. The costumes were very good and you got a very strong feel for the culture and the time. It was a very good movie, and I’m glad I watched it, despite the problems that Mel Gibson had.
