  • These kids, who are normally shrouded in fear from their diseases and often times smothered by parents who are scared out of their wits of losing their children, are able to experience, for once, the life of regular kids
  • And the best part is, that if there is a problem or they need medical attention, there is a full time on hand medical staff available to help
  • I really enjoyed working in the kitchen at the camp
  • Unfortunately, I felt like the camp counselors often looked down at the full time kitchen staff members, at least those of us who were new and really bottom of the totem pole
  • I never had an issue with the counselors except once when we were trying to clean the lunch dishes and the councelors were trying to set up for dinner (something they normally didn't do) and they just kept badgering us about the silver wear, which needs to go through the dishwasher twice in order to make sure it thoroughly cleaned

Hole in the Wall Gang Camp has quite a bit of noteriety throughout the country; providing a true summer camp experience to children suffering from terminal illnesses. Last summer I had to pleasure to work as a member of the kitchen staff, and was able to see first hand how much fun these kids have while at the camp.

These kids, who are normally shrouded in fear from their diseases and often times smothered by parents who are scared out of their wits of losing their children, are able to experience, for once, the life of regular kids. While at hole in the wall, they can get to know other kids who are also suffering from the same disease

(each session provides kids with certain diseases; one session will be cancer, the next will be cystic fibrosis, etc). They sleep in beautiful, airconditioned and air filtered cabins, they can swim, fish, ride horses, or just play a game of baseball in one of the fields with their fellow campers. And the best part is, that if there is a problem or they need medical attention, there is a full time on hand medical staff available to help. They are also fed meals that are healthy, fun, and creative (imagine chocolate pancakes, big bowls of ice cream, and french fries shaped like smily faces).

I really enjoyed working in the kitchen at the camp. The position of being ...

      • a camp counselor is a job that requires a lot of responsibilty and such, and I don’t know if I could handle having a cabin full of campers who, in all honesty, could become seriously ill while they are at the camp. Being in the kitchen allowed me to see the kids without having to take responsibilty for them. Unfortunately, I felt like the camp counselors often looked down at the full time kitchen staff members, at least those of us who were new and really bottom of the totem pole. I never had an issue with the counselors except once when we were trying to clean the lunch dishes and the councelors were trying to set up
for dinner (something they normally didn’t do) and they just kept badgering us about the silver wear, which needs to go through the dishwasher twice in order to make sure it thoroughly cleaned. It was annoying trying to get things cleaned and put away while different counselors kept coming in and asking about the silver wear.

The director of the camp was an incredibly friendly guy, my boss the head chef was a very nice woman whom I got along nicely with, and my coworkers all, for the most part, were very friendly towards me and each other. If I had fun just working in the kitchen, I can’t imagine how much it must be to be a camper there.
