Nearly everyone in the Western world knows about the comedy team of Monty Python. This British comedy troupe, featuring John Cleese and others, if famous for its unusual and offbeat humor. Monty Python came out with the movie Meaning of Life a number of years ago. Like the television show, the movie Meaning of Life is broken into a number of skits.

All but the first skit feature the general Monty Python actors. The first it was about corporate takeovers. It presented the elderly employees of a failed business creating a mutiny, dispatching of their bosses, and

setting sail, with the building that moves like a ship, and attacking other corporations housed in other buildings.

The skit was original, but it went on and on too long. It could’ve been cut by 15 minutes and been just as effective. As it was, the skit dragged and got boring.

The other skits in the show revolved around life, death, war, and other serious subject matters made silly and ridiculous by the Monty Python cast. Some of the skits worked better than others. A skit of British officers fighting against a tribe in Africa was funny ...

      • despite its dark subject matter.

This skit concerned an officer who woke up with a missing leg, and the hunt for his leg, which was apparently taken by a tiger. The running joke of a tiger in Africa was played out. In this skit, the British makers of Monty Python successfully parodied their own culture.

Another funny skit was a musical number dealing with birth control in the Catholic Church. An impoverished family tells their dozens and dozens of children that they must be sold for medical experiments because they cannot afford to feed them. The

song then goes into the various reasons why birth control is wrong according to the Catholic Church.

As a describing it, it sounds terribly depressing — and it is definitely dark humor — but it still was enjoyable. Other skits fell flat. For example, a disgusting skin about a man vomiting in an upscale restaurant was simply gross and not funny at all.

Overall I would say that this movie was uneven, with some funny skits and some that just fell flat. If you’re very bored, this is a movie worth watching — but you can probably find better things to do.
