The Expire XP shareware computer game is the free PC version of he board game RISK. It’s the best version of Risk out there, even though it has some down sides. Short on graphics, but high on playability. The graphics are very slim, and will not excite you.

There are almost no special effects, and nothing happens when you capture a territory, except that it changes to your color. There are some sound minor effects: a gun fires when you attack, and cheering sounds when

you win. Otherwise, it’s very slim of effects.

However, the intuitive reactions of the game are stellar. It’s AI is extremely well designed to react to your moves. It also reacts to other players.

You can have up to 4 players, or play by yourself against 3 computer players. Each one acts differently, and it even goes out for revenge! If one player takes a key territory from (computer driven) another, the computer player goes all out for revenge. This is an ...

      • awesome feature.

It really simulates live people well. You can set the difficulty level, and you can also set attributes for your AI opponents, such as Aggressive, Hunter, Defensive. In the newest version, you can also play with Strongholds.

You pick one land to be your stronghold, and if it is captured you are knocked out of the game, regardless of how man lands you control. The free version only has a world map, but the pay version ($19) comes with Europe and a dozen other

maps. You can also create your own customized worlds.

One drawback is that there is no way to shut the game off, if you get knocked out. Obviously if I’m knocked out of the game, I don’t want to sit and watch the 3 AI players play each other. You need to start the task manager and shut down the program.

That’s just one small drawback. They need a shut down button. Otherwise, it’s a solid pc game.

I highly recommend the Empire XP (Risk) game.
