NHL Hitz 2003 would seem to be obsolete when compared to the newer hockey games of the current generation but I must tell you it is not. In fact, it may be the holy grail of Hockey games. Released by Midway way back in late 2002 for the Playstation 2, Xbox and Game Cube the game was meant to be an arcade hockey version of Midway’s famous football franchise NFL Blitz. Sadly, Midway would only produce 3 games in the NHL Hitz series; however, these games have found a special place in the hearts of true hockey gamers and are actually a reason to dust off the old system and save your money by ignoring the glitz and glamor of the new systems and games of today.

The main component that keeps gamers playing the Hitz series, and Hitz 2003

especially, is because its both competitive and fun! NHL Hitz allows new players to pick up the controls and play right away with simple yet fluid gameplay. The fast paced, big hitting style of play will attract even non-hockey fans. Who wouldn’t want to hammer their friends head over heels in open ice or check them through the boards? And multi-player is where this game really shines.

You know how some games will cause rivalries to develop between friends? The rivalries in NHL Hitz 2003 are LEGENDARY! Because the game is only a 3 vs 3 style, line up selection and fights are so important. If your player or goaltender loses a fight they are out for the game. This makes every fight so important and adds even more to the intensity of the game.

The goaltenders are also able ...

      • to stand on their heads and stop even what seems like sure goals on the higher difficulty levels. I will say that there are times when the goalie will occasionally have a brain fart but for the most part the goalie A. I.

is terrific. The periods are only 3 minutes long, so the games usually only take about 15 minutes each. This leads to multiple series of best of 5,7,101 or however long you and your friends decide to play.

And while some may wonder how anyone can play a hockey game so long, trust me, the time will fly by while playing this game. The sad thing is that you are unable to change the length of the periods as there will be games you wish would last longer and the roster is obviously out of date being 8

years old, however, these issues certainly should not effect your decision to get this game. 3 minute periods just mean you play more games, and while you cannot play as Ovechkin, Crosby or Stamkos I would rather take Lemiux, Yzerman and Sackic any day.

The 2002 Olympic rosters being included in the game are also a great bonus. If you have the chance to get this game… don’t think, just buy it. Yes it is backwards compatible for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

You and your friends will be very glad you did! If you can’t find Hitz 2003 you might want to try NHL Hitz Pro (2004). Not exactly the same but still lots of fun. Now if we could just get another game like Hitz 2003 but with an updated/expanded roster, the world would be a better place.

Trust me, it would be! :)
