Highway Patrol: Hot Rod, the seventh episode of season two, focused on two brothers, Tommy and Harry Burke, who commit a robbery and then make their getaway in a hot rod that they believe is faster than any police car out there. Naturally, the driver goes too fast and is followed by a California Highway Patrolman.

This show had a real ‘wow’ moment, wow as

in shocking and stunned. I haven’t seen them do anything like this before. The frequent gunfire exchanges are normal and innocent. They don’t even make me flinch, but there is a shot in this show of the supercharged hot rod running over a woman. I mean, my heart jumped. I was not expecting that from this early TV series.

      • All I can say again is ‘wow’.

From that moment, the half hour drama becomes more standard as the police chase down the criminals, who aren’t very repentant. Actually, they continue their crime spree until they realize they’re pressing their luck and decide to pull one more job and leave the state. Too late.

Broderick Crawford starred as Chief Dan Mathews, with Gordon Lacy and

Joel Smith portraying the two brothers. The latter two were adequate in their portrayal and worked well with each other. That said, nothing really stood out about their acting, either. It was a pretty basic rendition of one being the leader and the other being more nervous, but neither really caring that they are breaking the law. In other words, standard characterizations.
