As the temperature outside rises, my workout resolve tends to wane. So when I had an opportunity to try out a water workout program, of course I gladly jumped right in. If you are looking for a no-impact aerobic and strength training routine, why not beat the heat and hit the water.

Essentially there are 6 workout disciplines: Water Yoga, Tai Chi, and Pilates, as well as Deep Breathing, Deep Water, and Spa Exercise. This program, the brainchild of Dr. Katz, combines her 50 years experience as a competitive swimmer, water fitness teacher, and her creation of the Wellness Spa at John Jay College in New York. Really once you try it, you’ll be sorry you didn’t get your hands on this workout sooner.

In addition to the 6 main workouts from each discipline, there are also several workouts which cross disciplines to create plans for special health concerns. Here you will find programs suitable for

back concerns, asthma, arthritis, pregnancy, and for seniors.

Moreover, there are also workouts which combine the disciplines to create intense boot camp workouts suitable for athletes. Here you can try workouts such as a 45 minute Aqua Circuit Cross Training, a 45 or 60 minute Tri-athlete Training Camp, or choose from many sport specific 45 minute training camps such as the Runners, Golfers, Bikers, Skiers, and more.

Yet another option, allows you to choose what you would like to concentrate on and create your own custom workout. If, for example, you wanted to focus on strength and flexibility, you need only choose the exercises that correspond to those benefits, and then build a plan of your choosing. The possibilities are endless, and rest assured you won’t get bored.

Each workout contains a warm-up, a main set, and a cool down. While additional workout gear is largely optional, you may wish to invest ...

      • in some water barbells, noodles, or other equipment. Although I tried the workouts sans equipment, I just found the Speedo Water Fitness Set at Bed Bath and Beyond for 39.99 USD. Now that I know I will be continuing these workouts, I am definitely going to purchase the 5 piece set.

The first workout I tried was the Water Yoga, after about 5 minutes of deep breathing for a warm-up; I got to try the 13 water asana. These exercises included the Child’s Pose, Cat, Mountain, and Warrior. There was also the Sun Salutation which combined about 6 steps and was interspersed throughout the main 20 minutes. The final 5 or so minutes contains the relaxation cool down. Here we performed a back float which would be similar to the relaxation pose of land yoga.

In similar fashion the Water Pilates, and Tai Chi contain about 5 minutes of breathing exercise, a 20 minute

exercise workout and about 5 minutes of relaxation. In Pilates, you can expect moves such as Leg Circles, Mermaid, Corkscrew, and Spinal Twists. In Tai Chi, you can expect moves such as Roll the Ball, Hands like Clouds and Yin Yang.

I really enjoyed this program and would recommend it to anyone that wants to add a little spice to their routine and still get a great no-impact aerobic and strength session in. Now that I am getting to learn the moves, I can’t wait to share them with friends and family.

If you’d like to try the Your Water Workout, You can currently find it on Amazon for 10.04 USD. Also to add resistance and maximize the benefits of any of the water workouts, check out the Speedo set at Bed Bath and Beyond. That particular set has a set of weighted ankle wraps, a fitness floatation belt and a set of water barbells.
