Mary Morris plays Matilda in The Ray Bradbury Theater: There Was an Old Woman. She has a visitor who just sits there and listens as she talks and talks, telling him some story about a little girl named Emily. As I listened, I wonder if this was a story about death personified, something like what The Twilight Zone did when Robert Redford portrayed Mr. Death to a woman who was afraid of

      dying.

Indeed, as it continued, it took on a deathly tone about body snatchers. It seems they wanted Matilda’s body, but she had no desire to go. She tries to stay away, but can’t; yet, she is insistent and threatens the body snatchers. These body snatchers are like zombie versions of men in black. There’s a really odd scene where they essentially put her body back together so she can reclaim ...

      • it. It’s like a surgical hospital scene with needle and thread.

The majority of this tale is narrated and by the time it ended, the whole of the theme was clear. It was a story of survival, a woman who had died and then awakened, post autopsy even, and now resided quite happily in her home.

The ending is actually quite fascinating and retained my attention more than anything else. At first, I

didn’t think that The Ray Bradbury Theater: There Was an Old Woman would entertain me, and while I was curious at the beginning, the middle was more disconcerting than anything else.

I don’t really know who the leading actress is or if I’ve seen her in anything before, but she had a commanding quality that was very necessary to this particular story. She managed to keep me watching without doing anything else, so that was an achievement.
