I got a chance to visit Gangtok in February 2003. It’s a four hour drive from Siliguri. The nearest Railway Station is New Jalpaiguri.

It’s a small city but very colourful and picturesque. One unique thing about the city is that you will rarely find a level ground to park your vehicle.

      It’s always either inclined upwards

      or downwards. Hotels are good.

The drive from Gangtok to Tosomgo Lake (pronounced as Changu Lake locally) is thrilling and exhilarating. Initially I had taken up the challenge to drive myself in spite of the repeated warnings of the Taxi drivers but had to give up seeing the weather and the terrain.

As the clouds come down ...

      • falling on you visibility becomes nearly zero which may result in the vehicle, along with its occupants, slipping down several thousand feet below. It will be very safe to hire a taxi which is available in plenty.

It’s terrific to visit the place between December and February as it’s filled with snow. Even the Tosomgo Lake is

        covered with ice.

You can move around the area near the lake on a yak which can be rented at average rates. From Gangtok you can move to Nathula which is the border of India and China and is worth visiting.

You also get to meet the Chinese Soldier’s there, it is said. We were unable to visit Nathula due to Bad Weather condition.
