What’s the stupidest decision a person could ever make? What has never had a good outcome for anyone who has tried it? What did Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada decide to have Spider-man do? The answer to all three questions is “Make a deal with the Devil”. Songs by the Charlie Daniels Band notwithstanding, nobody has ever come out ahead by making a deal with the Devil.

But when Spider-man’s Aunt May is dying

that’s exactly what he decides to resort to.

What does Mephisto want in return? Only the only good thing in Peter Parker’s life.

      His marriage.

Mephisto, for reasons that are never explained properly in the story, is offering to make it so that Peter’s Aunt won’t die (of the gun-shot wound she is currently suffering from, I feel I should point out that he doesn’t offer to shield her from any other potentially lethat activity ...

      • like being really old).

Peter and Mary Jane talk it over and decide to go through with it.

I half-way expected Mephisto to turn around and kill Aunt May in some other fashion, but apparently he was afraid that would be getting into a rut since he already did that to Johnny Blaze back when he agreed to be Ghost Rider.

Instead he shows Peter and MJ the child they will never have.

        This shocking

moment of pain and suffering was apparently all Mephisto was going for (which is odd given that in a matter of moments Peter won’t even remember that it ever happened).

Even for the Devil this is kind of petty.

This may be the worst story ever.

Spider-man was the last uncorrupted hero in my mind.

Now I have to think of him as that guy who went to Satan when life got tough.

        Good job Marvel.
