Rod Serling introduced this episode of Night Gallery by saying that he was considered to be the Howard Cosell of the crypt. That was an odd start, but it makes sense, in an odd way. Then we get to the evening’s entertainment, a half hour vehicle written by Serling and guest starring Burgess Meredith in the title character of Finnegan, Barry

Sullivan, and Cameron Mitchell. That’s quite a cast and certainly helps to give the show some punch.

The story takes place inside a prison where Meredith is a prisoner who has a hard time coping with life inside the prison walls. Sullivan is the psychiatrist who treats him. However, he also convinces another inmate named Tuttle, played by Mitchell, to put ...

      • Meredith under hypnosis in the hopes it would help him.

In many ways, this is a power of the mind story, and Finnegan’s mind is very susceptible to hypnosis. Ultimately, it goes too far and comes to an explosive ending that boggles the mind. What disturbed me was the psychiatrist who was so into the discovery and possibility of taking advantage of

Finnegan’s mind that he didn’t really care about the man.

Mitchell was outstanding in this role. He gave his character a bit of dimension that left him the most intriguing of the three. Meredith didn’t get to stretch as much. This wasn’t his best work.

Overall, this was an okay half hour, a sort of middle of the road outing for Night Gallery.
