  • Directed by John McNaughton I would say its definitely the weakest entry from the first season of the show and in the bottom five of both seasons of the show
  • The other problem is the climax, while shocking and sick, isn't overly memorable

Haeckel’s Tale is yet another one hour short film from the Showtime Series Masters of Horror. Directed by John McNaughton I would say its definitely the weakest entry from the first season of the show and in the bottom five of both seasons of the show. John McNaughton has definitely had some success directing chilling movies. He was behind the camera for

the gritty and truly scary Henry: Portrait of A Serial Killer. That film had me scared to walk out to my car for about a week. Yet one film probably doesn’t put you in the same class as Dario Argento, John Carpenter and John Landis. Not to mention Japanese directors like Miike or Tobe Hooper

Haeckel’s Tale gets off to a fantastic start ...

      • but after setting up some wonderful atmosphere and getting the person involved in the story it begins to fail. First of all, it drags in the middle. The other problem is the climax, while shocking and sick, isn’t overly memorable. I rewatched it for this review and the most memorable thing about the movie is how stunning the actress in it is.
        Other than that its lackluster.

If you are going to get into The Masters of Horror series this isn’t where you should start. Dark comedy horror like Deer Woman by Landis, Argento’s perverse and sexual Jenifer or Carpenter’s eerie Cigarette Burns all are leagues above this film. It’s not a total waste of time but its definitely not a highlight of this now cancelled Showtime series.

Heckle’s Tale. I don’t like movies that are under hour twenty five minutes however, I may consider this as you made it worthwhile helpful review.
