I read “the Dog of the South” by Charles Portis on the recommendation of a friend. This is a good book and I recommend it to others.

The dog of the south was written and is set in the American South in the 1970’s. This novel is the fictional story of Ray Midge who is a married

young man minding his own buissiness when his wife runs off with her ex husband and they take Ray’s car and credit cards. Ray is mostly offended by this whole affair, not so much that his wife left him but that she took his car and money and was insulted so he goes on a mission following the credit card ...

      • receipts to Mexico to get his car.

I enjoyed this book although it is very unreal. The ex husband is a loser who worked with Ray, he is running from the Secret Service because he has been sending letters that are threatening to the President. He is really unbalanced and it makes no sense why the wife would take back

up with him as he is crazy and sloppy and unnattractive while Ray is not a loser, is attractive and is mentally sound.

Some of the characters of this book such as the crazy doctor we meet are fun to read about but are not believable. Overall if you can ignore the clearly made up characters this is a fun read.
