I don’t know how I went so long without hearing about the Venture Bros. Truthfully, it is one of the best cartoon shows I have ever seen. And I do mean ever. It certainly outshadows anything and everything else seen on Adult Swim (not that I am saying that many of the other shows on Adult Swim are not good). I will admit it took me a while to warm up to the Venture Bros.

It is a very unique show, and not so in your face as most of the other Adult Swim line-up. It is very much character based, and the humor is often more subtle than on other shows (although often times the humor is not so subtle at all). It is a hilarious, action packed half

hour that is simply a treat to watch again and again and again. For those who are not aware of the Venture Bros.

, it is in essence a remake of the old Jonny Quest cartoons. But it is more than a remake, it is a complete re-imagining that is highly original, and in fact exceeds, in my opinion, the shows that were its inspiration. The titular Venture Bros, Dean and Hank, are the sons of Dr. Thaddeus Venture, would be super-scientist.

Venture seems to despise the boys, yet brings them everywhere he goes. Venture is a genius, who growing up was seen as being full of potential, but now is a bitter, withered middle aged man who is barely keeping his father’s super science business afloat. The boys themselves, well, are not exactly geniuses.

      • But they have an enthusiasm and love of adventure that never falters, regardless of the situation.

The fourth main character in the cast is Brock Samson, the body guard for both Dr. Venture and Dean and Hank. Samson is the epitome of testerone fueled manliness, and neither he nor the writers are afraid to pull any punches. As for the rest of the cast, Dr.

Venture, Samson and the boys find themselves surrounded by the most unique cast of side characters and villains that you will see anywhere. The most commonly used villain in this DVD is the Monarch, who often threatens to take over an episode whenever he makes an appearance, but you will also see such interesting characters as: Professor Impossible, Baron Underbheit, Dr. Girlfriend, Phantom Limb and even a special surprise visit from

Race Bannon (of Dr. Quest fame) himself.

Special features are somewhat slight. There is commentary on a handful of episodes. More interesting are two bonus episodes, outside of the 13 episodes that made up season 1: these are the pilot (an excellent episode in and of itself), along with A Very Venture Christmas, the show’s Christmas special. The Christmas special is only half length, and not one of their better efforts, in my opinion, but it is very nice to have the pilot.

The remaining two special features are a couple of mockumentaries that have some humor to them, but are definitely something that many might find too unusual and not in-your-face enough to really be funny. Oh well. The most important special feature of a DVD is of course the show, and with the Venture Bros. it is a good show indeed.
