“Shutter Island” by Dennis Lehane is a novel adapted to a movie called “Shutter Island”. I rented the DVD of Shutter Island from a local DVD store three days ago and decided to watch it yesterday. I had a lot of expectations from the movie since I am an ardent fan of Ben Kingsley. The story begins on a ferry where a U. S marshal namely Edward Teddy Daniels is going to a Medical facility for the criminally insane, called Ashcliffe Hospital with his newly appointed partner Chuck Aule.

Ashcliffe is located on an island surrounded by water on all sides. Upon reaching the island they are greeted by Doctor Cole (Ben kingsley), who runs this facility. The two U. S marshals are here for a case regarding a patient Rachel Solando who has escaped

from the facility even though her room was locked from outside and shutter island is an isolated island.

On the examination of her room, they discover a note, which mentions someone as 67 and a law of 4. The two marshals demand to speak with the hospital staff and access to their personal files which is refused by Doctor Cole and later on, his fellow doctor. Teddy and chuck investigate a few patients. Teddy tells Chuck about Andrew Laddies who killed his wife.

They try to find graves of people who died in the hospital. When they reach back to the facility, they are told that Rachel has come back whom they investigate. Teddy has nightmares regarding his wife and World War II. On investigation of Ward C, teddy meets someone who forbids him to trust Chuck.

      • two partners get separated and Teddy finds the real Rachel Solando in a place among the rocks. The story then reaches its climax in a light house, where we come to know that Teddy is a mental patient namely Andrew and he has been on the island for two years. The plot of the movie was brilliantly written. The beginning of the movie was excellent.

i thought initially that the movie is thriller or suspense. As the story moved on, I got trapped in the story telling ability of the writer. The movie became interesting as it moved on from scene to scene. Leonardo Di Caprio and Ben Kingsley did a terrific job with their respective roles in the movie.

As the story became more and more complicated, it gets absorbing to

the point where I couldn’t leave the TV before I finished the movie. The movie made me feel like a rat in a maze. The climax of the movie is completely amazing. I was awestruck when the climax came.

The writer paid attention to the explanation of each and every detail. The movie leaves a lasting impact on its audience and leaves them wondering and admiring it even after the movie is finished. Throughout the movie, I felt exactly like Teddy but the end bowled me out completely. The writer and the director have done a splendid job.

All in all, the movie is meant only for intelligent audience who can watch and appreciate a good screenplay and are longing for a good plot. I would rate the movie as 10/10 and recommend it to one and all.
